Loma Paloma RV Park, Presido, TX
$250/month, sketchy WiFi, Verizon 3LTE, lots of sites, great solar, quiet, lots of paths to walk and bike behind the park
We fell in love with this area. Drive 170 from here to Terlingua and thank me later. (Warning: road includes 15% grade)
We travel full time, but this was our first experience in SW Texas and we loved it. Stayed at the park for a month (price includes tax, but electric is metered) and this was by far the least expensive campground we’ve experienced. We stayed for the month of March (2018) and the place was practically empty, though there are more seasonal campers during the winter months. 50amp FHUs, wifi (no streaming), 2 bars Verizon LTE.
The park owner and crew are great. The park is mostly a very large, flat dirt/gravel lot with long rows of RV sites and some desert foliage sprinkled around. Plenty of room for any rig/tow setup. There is a nice open view of Mexico and its mountains to the south, and to the north is State land with several miles of hiking/biking trails. There is a laundry room (pay on honor system), bathroom/shower, a small library of books/movies, and a centrally located lounge where everyone is welcome to meet daily at 4pm (wind permitting) for ‘happy hour’ (BYOB). We particularly enjoyed the socializing, since we work remotely from the road and haven’t found much community on the road.
The town of Presidio has just about anything you could need and is 5 miles away. There are 2 fuel stations (both with diesel), a grocery store, dollar stores, a few restaurants, bakery, library, etc. But, it is a small town, and they don’t sell/serve liquor. The saving grace for the town, I think, is that it is one of the only remaining crossable Texas border towns. There are other border towns, but they have mostly dried up since new regulations have closed several points of entry. That being said, we actually did not cross the border, but it is right there in town if you want to. Several people in the RV park go to dinner there once a week and we were told it is very safe.
The best part of this area is the proximity to other parts of Texas, like Marfa, Terlingua, and Big Bend NP. It’s 60 miles from any of these places, which may seem like a long distance, but most of those areas have poor cell service and are much more expensive to stay in. Since we rely on cell service for work, we must have it wherever we stay.
